A special thanks to Keira Hanrahan, who served on the Board for four years and led the Policy Committee with deep experience and expertise. Her shoes will be hard to fill.

ARTICLES OF ASSOCIATION AMENDMENTS

Two amendments were made at the AGM held on November 23, 2023 to our Articles of Association. These amendments include:

Term of Office

To transition from two-year to three-year terms for Directors, a transitory provision has been implemented for the 2024 to 2026 period, allowing the two longest-standing board members to add an additional year for continuity of governance, with the removal of this provision scheduled for 2027, eliminating the need for a separate vote on said removal.

Remuneration

No salary will be paid to Directors. The Board may grant Directors an honorarium in recognition of their time and effort.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & ENGAGEMENT

AACS is enthusiastic about involving parents in the development and implementation of our transformative new five-year strategic plan. Recognizing the invaluable role parents play, we aim to foster a collaborative partnership that encourages open communication, transparency, and active participation. Through regular forums, workshops, and interactive sessions, we aspire to provide parents with insights into our strategic objectives, seek their input, and collectively work towards enhancing the overall educational experience for our students. Please watch your email inbox in January to find out how you can be involved in this important initiative.

STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Association of Alberta Public Charter Schools Conference
Teachers and administrators from AACS had the pleasure of attending the TAAPCS Conference at the end of October, hosted by Almadina Language Charter Academy in Calgary. AACS teachers hosted professional development sessions, and incredible learning took place along with other Alberta public charter schools.

POLICY CHANGES

7070 BP: Inclusion
AACS is committed to creating an inclusive and diverse learning environment that values the unique strengths of its students, staff, and community members, ensuring equal opportunities for all. The policy establishes guidelines for fostering a welcoming and respectful educational atmosphere, promoting a sense of belonging, maintaining high expectations, encouraging collaboration, and building capacity, partnerships, and opportunities. This policy has been redrawn and simplified to reflect positivity and a broad governance perspective.

9000 BP: Student Transporation
Student safety and well-being is the most critical element of our bus service, and the AACS Board of Directors aims to assist parents in transporting their children to school. The substantive amendment to this policy relates to the limit of 75 minutes one-way, accounting for all time spent on the bus.
